The CISSP exam explained: CAT format, length, score
Before revising, you need to understand what you are up against. Here is how the CISSP exam works: adaptive format, number of questions, duration, scoring and test-day strategy.
The adaptive format (CAT)
In English, the exam uses CAT (Computerized Adaptive Testing): the algorithm adjusts the difficulty of each question based on your previous answers. The more you get right, the harder questions become — and vice versa. Important consequence: you cannot go back to a question you have already submitted.
- Questions: 100 to 150.
- Duration: 3 hours.
- Passing score: 700 out of 1000.
In other languages, the exam may be offered in a linear format (fixed questions, longer). Always check the current details on isc2.org.
Question types
Most are 4-option MCQs framed as scenarios. There are also a few advanced items (drag-and-drop, hotspots on a diagram). The classic trap: several answers look correct. You must pick the best one, from a security manager's point of view — not the most technical.
The 8-domain weighting
Each domain carries a percentage of the score. Domain 1 is the heaviest (16%). See the detail and the 8-domain overview to prioritize your revision.
Test-day strategy
- Manage time: ~1.5 min per question. Don't get stuck; decide and move on.
- Read the whole scenario: the context (role, phase, constraint) points to the right answer.
- Eliminate first: drop the 2 clearly wrong options, then choose between the 2 remaining from a risk-management angle.
- Think "preventive > detective > corrective" and "people & policy before technology": often the key to the "best" choice.
- Don't panic if questions get harder: in CAT, that's a good sign.
