The certification

How to earn the CISSP

The CISSP (ISC2) is more than an exam: it also requires experience, an endorsement and an ethics commitment. Here are all the criteria.

1 · Pass the exam

Adaptive (CAT) format in English: 100–150 questions, 3 hours. Passing score: 700 / 1000. Linear (and longer) format in other languages. Scenario-based MCQs, some advanced item types.

2 · Prove your experience

5 years of cumulative, paid work experience in at least 2 of the 8 CBK domains. −1 year with a 4-year degree (or higher) or an ISC2-approved credential → 4 years minimum.

3 · No experience yet? Associate

You may sit the exam before having the experience: if you pass, you become an Associate of ISC2 and have 6 years to earn the required 5 years.

4 · Get endorsed

Within 9 months of passing, an existing ISC2-certified professional attests to your experience. Otherwise ISC2 can act as endorser.

5 · Agree to the code of ethics

Subscribe to and uphold the ISC2 Code of Ethics (4 canons); answer the legal/background questions at registration.

6 · Maintain the certification

120 CPE credits over 3 years (continuing education, ~40/year) plus the Annual Maintenance Fee (AMF). Otherwise it expires.

Frequently asked

The CISSP demystified — your questions

The essentials about the CISSP certification, its exam and how to prepare. For more depth, see our CISSP guides.

What is the CISSP certification?

The CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional) is the leading cybersecurity certification, issued by ISC2. It validates broad expertise across 8 domains, from risk management to software development security.

How many domains does the CISSP cover?

8 domains (the CBK): risk management (16%), asset security (10%), architecture and engineering (13%), networks (13%), identity and access management (13%), security testing (12%), security operations (13%) and software development (10%).

How do you earn the CISSP?

Pass the exam (adaptive CAT format, 100-150 questions, 700/1000 to pass), prove 5 years of experience in at least 2 domains (4 years with a degree or an approved credential), get endorsed by an ISC2-certified member, agree to the code of ethics, then maintain the certification (120 CPE credits over 3 years).

Is CISSP Express really free?

Yes, 100% free, with no ads and no mandatory account. Courses, memo sheets and quizzes are openly available in French and English. Your progress is stored locally in your browser, with no tracker.

Is the CISSP hard?

The CISSP is demanding because of its breadth (8 domains) more than its technical depth. Structured per-domain revision, mnemonics and exam-style quizzes demystify it and help you pass on the first try.

How long does it take to study for the CISSP?

Plan for 2 to 4 months depending on your experience. The CISSP Express PDCA method (plan, study, test, adjust) targets your weak spots domain by domain and optimizes your study time.
