CISSP without experience: becoming an Associate of ISC2
Don't have the 5 years of experience (yet)? Good news: you can still take the exam and earn Associate of ISC2 status. Here is how this path works — ideal for students and career changers.
The principle
Experience is required for certification, not for the exam. So you can take the CISSP now: if you pass, you become an Associate of ISC2 with 6 years to accumulate the required 5 years of experience.
Associate ≠ full CISSP
The Associate status proves you passed the exam, but it is not the CISSP title yet. You cannot present yourself as a "CISSP" until the experience is earned and endorsed. That said, it is a strong signal to a recruiter: you have already cleared the hardest hurdle.
The steps
- Study and pass the exam (same 8 domains, same 700/1000 bar).
- Become an Associate: subscribe to the code of ethics and pay the Annual Maintenance Fee (AMF), which also applies to Associates.
- Earn the experience: 5 years in at least 2 domains, within 6 years.
- Have the experience endorsed to switch to the full CISSP.
Who is it a good idea for?
- Final-year students: take the exam while the knowledge is fresh, then build experience on the job.
- Career changers: prove your theoretical level even before you have all the field experience.
- Motivated candidates: not waiting 5 years to pass the exam is a real career accelerator.
Watch-outs
The Associate status requires earning CPEs and paying the AMF each year, like a certified member. And the 6-year clock is ticking: plan experience that clearly covers at least 2 domains.
